When you take Unisom, the medication blocks the production of histamine and acetylcholine in the body. When these compounds are reduced, a person will start to feel sleepier.

If you are only having trouble sleeping while pregnant, your doctor might recommend Benadryl. Unisom is likely to be recommended for consistent nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Everything you eat, take, and sometimes even put on your skin can be circulated through your baby, too. From an FDA perspective, Unisom has been generally considered safe for pregnant women.

But, talk to your doctor before taking any medications. Think about the risks and benefits before taking Unisom. If your sleep is greatly affected to the point where you are having difficulty functioning during the day, talk to your doctor. If your doctor recommends against Unisom or other sleep aids during pregnancy, there are still steps you can take to sleep better.

One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that over a year period, people who regularly took the amount of diphenhydramine found in two Benadryl or two Extra Strength Tylenol PM pills roughly once every week or two were at significantly increased risk for dementia. The links between these OTC drugs and dementia are far from certain. To his knowledge, these studies are not being done. Prescription sleep aids carry their own risks.

Mergenhagen was also a co-author on the Veterans Affairs sleep-aid study. Headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and hallucinations are a few of the short-term concerns associated with hypnotics—a class of prescription drugs designed to induce sleep that includes Ambien, Lunesta, Sonata and other popular meds, she says.

One observational study published in in the BMJ looked at electronic medical records data from more than 30, adults and the usage of common hypnotics, including zolpidem sold under the brand name Ambien and others , temazepam Restoril , eszopiclone Lunesta , zaleplon Sonata and other barbiturates, benzodiazepines and sedative antihistamines. Even people who took these drugs sparingly—like once every few weeks—were more likely to die than those who did not take them at all. The authors of the study tried to control for pre-existing medical conditions and other factors that could explain why people taking these drugs died or developed cancer at higher rates than non-users.

The drugs were also associated with car accidents, falls and depression—all of which could explain the elevated mortality risks. But the risks remained. The authors also found associations between the use of hypnotics and specific types of cancer—notably, lymphomas and cancers of the lungs, colon and prostate—but they did not offer any cause-and-effect mechanisms that might explain the links.

More recent research , in both people and animals , has turned up more preliminary links to cancer. PM Pain: For adults and children 12 years of age and older, 1 caplet should be taken at bedtime, or as directed by a doctor. Simple Slumbers: For adults and children 18 years of age or older, 2 gummies should be taken before bedtime, or as directed by a doctor.

It works by blocking the effects of a naturally occurring neurotransmitter your body makes called histamine. When histamine is reduced, you experience drowsiness, which allows you to fall asleep faster and stay asleep. The lack of histamine causes you to get drowsy and fall asleep quicker.

Simple Slumbers contains a proprietary blend of melatonin with passionflower, lemonbalm, and vitamin B6. Melatonin provides a triple effect by allowing you to fall asleep fast, sleep soundly and wake refreshed. Melatonin works naturally with the body to regulate the sleep-wake cycle by physiologically signaling to the body that it is time to sleep—causing drowsiness and lowering body temperature. Melatonin promotes sleep in a way that resembles the natural onset of sleep—through quiet wakefulness to the sleeping state, while maintaining normal sleep cycle.

Studies show that Unisom helps troubled sleepers sleep soundly through the night. However, like any OTC aid, results may vary. This is a side effect of the antihistamine. When you stop taking Unisom, this side effect will go away. Links to websites that are not under the control of Chattem, Inc.
